ReAct prompting is a prompting pattern that interleaves natural-language reasoning (“Thought”) with explicit actions (“Act”), such as calling tools or retrieving information, so a language model can plan, take an external step, observe the result, and continue toward a goal with traceable intermediate steps.

What is ReAct Prompting?

ReAct (Reason + Act) is a way to structure agent-like behavior in LLM applications. Instead of asking a model to answer in one shot, you prompt it to alternate between (1) deciding what it should do next and (2) doing it via a tool call or a retrieval step. After each action, the model receives an “Observation” (tool output, retrieved text, API response) and uses that evidence to choose the next step. This loop reduces hallucinations because the model can ground later steps in actual observations. In production systems, the “Thought” text may be hidden, while the actions and observations remain auditable. ReAct is commonly used with tool calling, web/search connectors, RAG pipelines, and multi-step workflows where the model must verify facts, compute values, or interact with external systems.

Where ReAct is used and why it matters

ReAct is used in customer support agents (look up account state before replying), data assistants (query a database then summarize), research copilots (retrieve sources then synthesize), and automation agents (create tickets, send emails, update CRM). It matters because it separates “decide” from “do,” enabling better control: you can limit which tools are available, validate tool inputs, log actions, and apply guardrails on each step. It also improves reliability by forcing evidence collection before final answers.

Examples

  • RAG + ReAct: Thought: “I need policy text.” Act: retrieve documents. Observation: top passages. Thought: “Now summarize with citations.”
  • Calculator tool: Act: run calculation. Observation: numeric output. Then explain the result.
  • API workflow: Act: call shipping-status API. Observation: “Delivered.” Then draft the user response.

FAQs

Does ReAct require the model to reveal its chain-of-thought?

No. Many systems keep internal reasoning private and only expose actions, observations, and a final answer.

How is ReAct different from tool calling?

Tool calling is the mechanism for invoking tools. ReAct is the control pattern that decides when to call tools and how to iterate using observations.

How do I learn ReAct for agentic AI?

Start by designing a small loop: define tools, standardize “Action/Observation” formats, log every step, and add evaluation cases that punish hallucinations and reward correct tool use.
