Day 6: Behavioral Questions (Part 1)

Problem:

Tell me about a conflict you resolved in your team.

Solution:

The exact answers to these questions will depend on your experience and the scenario you pick. What matters the most is how you structure your answer.

Follow these guidelines to ensure your actions and competencies are highlighted:

1. When answering such questions, the use of frameworks is highly encouraged. In this case, you can use the STAR framework:

  • Situation: What was the situation that created the conflict?
  • Task: What was your task?
  • Action: What actions did you take to resolve the conflict?
  • Result: What was the final result or outcome?

Here are a few more pointers to ace behavioral interviews:

2. Create a “story bank” of past experiences that highlight your competencies

As all the questions are tied to your past experience, ensure you have a good variety of examples to share.

3. Ask for clarification if you do not understand the question

Some questions are vague by design to see if you seek clarification to reduce the potential of solving for the wrong problem. So always ask for clarification if you do not understand something.

4. Practice, a lot!

Practice makes perfect. Practice as much as possible. The more you practice, the easier these interviews get.

5. Enroll in Interview Kickstart’s TPM Interview Course

The course is designed and taught by experts from FAANG+ companies to help you nail TPM interviews. It includes mock interviews with tech leads and hiring managers from top-tier tech companies.

Here are a few more questions for practice:

  1. Tell me about a time you disagreed with your team/manager, and how you handled the situation.
  2. Tell me about a time you got buy-in from peers who were initially resistant to your idea.
  3. How do you deal with difficult stakeholders?

Frameworks, such as STAR, allow you to answer behavioral questions in a structured manner, ensuring you don’t leave out important details. To learn more about effectively using frameworks in TPM interviews, join Interview Kickstart’s TPM course — designed and taught by FAANG+ experts to help you nail interviews.

The curriculum is planned very well and covers all the basics of programming, algorithms, and system design. Omkar's foundational videos are especially world-class and provide a good foundation before the live problem-solving sessions. Also, technical and career coaching are available during the support period, which is a good value-add. Overall, very satisfied with the program and the learning.
