The exact figure for base pay ranges from $80,000 to $200,000, but most software engineers get a base pay close to $100,000.

Capital One Software Engineer Interview Process

The Capital One interview process for software engineers will put you to the test on various fronts to ensure that you're capable of assisting them in achieving their objectives. The most commonly tested topics in Captial One software engineer interviews include algorithms, python, and take-home assignments. Topics like SQL, analytics, and product metrics may also be asked based on relevance to the team and the role.

The Capital One interview process for a software engineer consists of two parts:

  1. Online assessment
  2. Power Day

1. Online Assessment Part of the Capital One Interview Process

The first part of the Capital One software engineer interview process is an online assessment test. This is assigned to you after you clear the initial screening call with HR or the hiring manager. You might be given up to two weeks to complete the test or have to do them on the spot.

There will be four questions on Code Signal, which you’ll have to complete in 70 mins. The questions will range in complexity, but it has been observed that just completing 3.25 is enough for you to proceed to the final round — Power Day.

2. Power Day in the Capital One Interview Process

The Power Day consists of four separate interviews. The first two are technical or “Job Fit” rounds; the third one is the behavioral interview, and the last is a case interview. The last round (case interview) is unique to the Capital One interview process.

You can expect Leetcode-style questions of medium difficulty and system design questions in the two technical interviews. As for the behavioral interview, the questions are pretty much the same as with other companies.

3. Case Interview Round in the Capital One Interview Process

The last round of the Capital One interview process is the case interview. It helps the interviewers assess your logical reasoning, communication, quantitative skills, and business judgment. It is divided into three sections:

  1. Business situation and framework: Keeping the case you’ve been given in mind, you’ll have to put together a simple case framework to answer the interviewer’s questions. When creating it, you’ll need to focus on the areas you deem important to answer the main question.
  2. Quantitative question: This section focuses on gauging your math skills. The interviewer will provide you with some data, and then you’ll have to carry out the calculations.
  3. Recommendation: In the last section, you’ll have to offer to make and defend a recommendation. You can form your recommendation based on the calculations you have done in the previous section. Just study the numbers, trust your instincts, and form your opinion.

Tips for The Capital One Case Interview Round

Some useful tips for the case interview round of the Capital One interview process:

  • When the recruiter gives you a brief about the case, make sure you take notes.
  • Don’t shy away from asking questions. Ask the required questions to have a clear idea of what the case is about.
  • Often the cases won’t be based on the finance industry. So don’t be taken aback.
  • Give yourself some time to gather your thoughts before you begin answering.
